London - The Most Spectacular Winter Wonderland During Christmas

8 mins. read

Christmas in London is a truly enchanting and fairytale experience. The city is converted into a beautiful snowy wonderland almost immediately after the temperature lowers and the clocks fall back, shimmering with Christmas lights and fancifully adorned trees, with winter pop-ups and Christmas markets at every corner and Christmas tunes drifting through the air.

When December rolls around, everyone appears to become a little cosier, and you can spend your spare time with hot drinks, festive plays and pantos, rewatches of your favourite Christmas movies, gliding around scenic ice rinks, and having a full knees-up at all the Christmas parties. It all can be experienced all together in London during Christmas time.

Experience the joy of the festival season in the United Kingdom as you explore tall plazas illuminated by dazzling Christmas lights and dine on seasonal foods at street food stalls and impromptu igloos while listening to the murmur of familiar carols resonating through the air.

Christmas in London has something special for everyone, whether they're searching for traditional activities, buzzed-up bars, Christmas markets, ice skating, or just a warm holiday supper. It all sounds so interesting. Right. Imagine actually being on Christmas in London will be so surreal. So let's get on the journey to explore the winter wonderland of London during Christmas.

The Christmas Lights In London

London makes a beautiful backdrop for holiday lights thanks to its famed streets and historic buildings. One of the finest ways to begin Christmas in London is to see the city streets lit up.

Countless major streets are festooned with spectacular decorations for the holidays. Each year, some have a new Christmas-related theme, while others keep to nostalgia and recreate old decorations.

Many are accessible on foot and situated in the central London region. Highlights include Carnaby Street's joyful, colourful display, the 17-metre-tall Christmas spirits on Regent Street, and Oxford Street's abundance of hanging golden stars. The majority of Christmas lights start to come on in early November.

Christmas At Kew

Christmas at Kew, now in its tenth year, is a spectacular activity during the Christmas holidays in London. It has a fun winter path that captures the season's spirit with a high-tech synchronised sound and light show.

Upbeat music generates areas that go well with the light displays on the clearly indicated route that winds through the gardens. Christmas music songs are presented in magnificent ways, old songs are whimsically reimagined, and the 12 Days of Christmas are pleasantly horticultural.

Until the enormous greenhouse, lit in music and light spectacular, which serves as the culmination of Christmas at Kew, charming references to holiday customs are strewn along the walk.

The 2.7-kilometre circuit features frequent independent food trucks where you can pause for alcoholic beverages and hearty fare during the winter. Timed tickets for specific days between November 16 2022 and January 8 2023 must be reserved in advance at kew.org.

It is strongly recommended to take an open-top bus trip if you enjoy viewing the Christmas lights in Central London but wish to escape the throng.

On a 1960s Routemaster bus, the Vintage Bus Christmas Tour will whisk you through several holiday attractions in the city. From Oxford Street to Harrods, you can take in all the holiday cheer Central London offers while being amused (British style) with humorous commentary.

Christmas Holiday Shopping

Are you looking for the ideal present for your loved ones or something for Secret Santa at work? Why not do it in a significant city with countless options despite the crowds?

The alternatives are endless: browse the holiday displays on Oxford Street, go into Harrods, Hamleys, and Selfridges, or visit Covent Garden, Camden, or Westfields. Make it memorable and cherished by turning it into a day out with your pals!

One of the greatest activities to do in London at Christmas is shopping; it's like going to New York and should be on everyone's bucket list even if you don't have anything to purchase.

Winter Wonderland

One of the greatest places in London for family holiday entertainment is Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Winter Wonderland provides an upbeat holiday spirit for the entire family. It combines celebration, theme park, and German Christmas hamlet.

Visit the Ice Kingdom, an immersive sculpted ice experience, skate on the largest ice rink in the UK, or test your nerves on one of the numerous adrenaline-pumping roller coasters. There are ice sculpture classes, a rousing circus, several pubs, Christmas markets, and various festively-flavoured street cuisine. Although it's a sizable event and can get crowded, it's a fantastic way to spend Christmas in London.

Winter Wonderland runs from November 18, 2022 through January 2, 2023, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

London on the Eve of Christmas

Christmas Holiday Shopping

Being in London during the holidays is remarkable, but spending Christmas Day in the city is also a unique experience. In London, Christmas Day is the least busy day of the year, so take advantage of the opportunity to stroll around the parks and see the holiday decorations.

Don't miss one of the Christmas Day traditional lunch cruises on the River Thames that will provide a festive feast complete with sparkling wine, a four-course meal, and traditional mince pies. London's Christmas Day river cruise and guided city tour include carol singing, champagne, and a traditional Christmas meal.

Experience the sights and sounds of London while travelling on a deluxe bus on a morning or afternoon trip. You'll see well-known locations, including Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, and Tower Bridge.

The Somerset House: Ice Skating

One of the highlights of London in the Xmas season is ice skating at Somerset House. The neoclassical courtyard is converted into a mystical winter paradise with a 40-foot Christmas tree thanks to a partnership with Moet & Chandon.

Beginners can learn the necessary skills at the on-site skate school to go to the Hotel Chocolat booth near the ring and warm up with a hot chocolate. Additionally, a temporary alpine restaurant is there, and the Skate Lounge serves a wide variety of champagne drinks.

Ice skating at Somerset House is available from November 16, 2022 to January 15, 2023. Adult ticket prices range from £10 to £22, while kid tickets range from £7.50 to £11. A specialised ice marshal can be hired for an extra fee of £35 to assist parties of three to fifteen.

Christmas in London can make anybody's heart sing. It's the nicest time of year to witness the city come to life for some reason, with all the Christmas lights, holiday markets, and joyful Londoners.

During the peak season, the prices of London tour packages can really skyrocket, so it's better to plan the trip in advance and immerse yourself in so many beautiful things to do in London during the holiday season; they range from Christmas markets and Christmas shopping in London to ice skating rinks and Christmas festivities.
