Get to know more about Kargil before booking your tour packages

A sightseeing vacation to Kargil can be an amazing experience for tourists and travellers. The town has an average elevation of 8780 feet, or 2676 metres, and is located along the Suru River (the Indus River). Located at a distance of about 205 km from Srinagar, Kargil faces the northern areas across the LOC. As is the case with most areas in the Himalayas, Kargil too has a temperate climate. The summers in Kargil may just be the perfect time to book your Kargil tour packages online, for you will be able to enjoy some hot days that are accompanied by cool nights. On the other hand, winters are rather long and chilly, when temperatures may drop even below −20 °C (−4 °F).

Ranging from packages for groups to special packages made for the ladies, for a Kargil trip, you can find several tour packages online for Kargil at Veena World which is generally coupled as a Leh-Ladakh, Pangong, and Kargil trip. The price for such packages generally begins from around ₹ 50,000, and will, of course, vary with your itinerary, the number of days you choose, the destinations you wish to cover in your Kargil vacation, the tourist spots which are being covered, the amenities offered, and so on.

Geography and Seasons

Located in the high Himalayan mountains, Kargil enjoys pleasant summers and cold winters. The months from November through to February are the colder months of the winter season when the temperatures drop down to sub-zero levels as the entire area is covered with snow. The best time for a vacation or trip to Kargil would be during the summer months. The temperature is rather comfortable and is perfect for sightseeing. The temperature at the time ranges from 4°C to 33°C.

The Culture

You can also choose to look at various Kargil tour packages and their costs based on whether you want to attend some particular event or festival in Kargil. Some of the major Kargil festivals are: Hemis Festival: One of the most well-known festivals, the Hemis Festival is celebrated towards the end of June or early July. The festival is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava. Dosmoche Festival: Another important festival celebrated in the region. Dosmoche Festival is held in the second half of February. The Dosmoche Festival and the Losar Festival are both celebrated on the arrival of the New Year. Losar Festival: Losar Festival is celebrated for 2 weeks during December and January. Ladakhi Buddhists offer prayers to the Gods during this festival, in Gompas as well as in their native shrines.

The Experience

When checking the price of Kargil tour packages, one will, of course, need to keep several things in mind, all the way from the costs to the tourism spots in Kargil included in the packages. To help you ensure that you are able to cover all the important destinations and attractions on your Kargil trip, here are some of the top spots in Kargil that you can include in your itinerary:

The Kargil War Memorial

A memorial built by the Indian Army, the Kargil War Memorial is located in Drass. The memorial is located at a distance of about 5 km from the city centre and falls on the Srinagar-Leh National highway. This memorial was built in the memory of all the soldiers and the officers of the Indian Army who gave their lives for the country in the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict, which is generally known as the Kargil War. The memorial has an epitaph that displays all the names of the officers and soldiers who were martyred in the war. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26th July at the memorial. On your Kargil trip, this is one spot that you simply should not miss. The main attraction at the memorial is the sandstone wall that stands in the open with the names of all the personnel of the army, next to which is a souvenir shop. From the memorial, tourists can even gaze at some of the peaks that the Indian Army had captured back from Pakistan in the Kargil War.

Hundarman Broq

Hundarman Broq is a tumbledown ghost village that is located at a distance of about 11 km northeast from Kargil. Set in a sharp mountain gully, Hundarman Broq makes for a remarkable sight as rocky crags tower above the village and a steeply raked arc of stone-walled terraces sits below. Virtually, all the low ceiling homes in the village are stacked on top of one another, which, all in all, form a fascinating core. The village has been preserved in its form in the high altitudes and makes for a very interesting place for sightseeing in Kargil. You can check out Kargil tour packages online at Veena World that include guided visits to the village. With a guided tour, you will also get access to a two-room museum of memory that displays several aged utensils as well as a number of touching personal mementos of the former residents of the village, along with some projectiles that hit the village during the various Indo-Pakistan wars. Until the year 1971, the village was a part of Pakistan, till it was abandoned a few years later. On the way to reach the village, you also cross a minefield area that earlier formed the Indo–Pakistan border. There is a tea shop nearby where you can rent binoculars to catch a glimpse of the current LOC at the ruined village of Brolma.

Munshi Aziz Bhat Serai Museum

This is a popular tourist spot that is included in numerous Kargil trip and vacation itineraries. Before 1947, Kargil played an important role and was a Silk Route trading centre. Celebrating the same, the Munshi Aziz Bhat Serai Museum is quite an intriguing private museum that illustrates Kargil’s caravan trade to Central Asia with numerous saddles, coins, maps, and even some rare photos from 1931 which were taken by Rupert Wilmot. The museum is named after the grandfather of the owner, and it was from his now-derelict caravanserai that many of the exhibits were rescued. To reach the museum, you can climb the stairway that starts from the Main Bazar, located about 100 m north of the Roots Café.

Apati Buddha

There is a very well-known Yurbaltak Buddha figure located near Kargil, without which any sightseeing vacation to Kargil remains incomplete. Making for a half day trip from Kargil, it is a very interesting walk to get here. To access the statue, you will have to take a short but scenic walk from the end of the road. The walk will take you over a stone-paved path through the traditional homes that dot the Apati village. Unless your Kargil tour package price includes the trip to and from Apati, you may have to opt for a taxi to take you there.
