About Bhutan Tourism

Bhutan is a South Asian wonderland that has been a true “Bucket List” destination for diverse types of travellers from across the world. Kingdom of Bhutan tourism is popular among nature lovers, spiritually inclined, romantic souls, and more. This Himalayan Kingdom puts a significant focus on protecting its environment, preserving its culture, and measuring success through happiness rather than just its GDP.  Gross National Happiness (GNH) is a philosophy and framework embraced by Bhutan, which prioritises well-being over material wealth. People in Bhutan are welcoming and laid back. Booking a Bhutan tourism package and visiting this country would be ideal for escaping the stress of daily life and seeking inner peace amid a tranquil ambience.

As surrounding nations undergo rapid change, Bhutan remains steadfast in preserving its ancient traditions, safeguarding both its cultural heritage and unspoiled natural beauty. This is one of the major reasons why Bhutan and tourism go hand in hand. Many of Bhutan’s historic treasures are well preserved, and a large percentage of the country is forested, thereby offering pristine landscapes and rare wildlife. On the streets of Bhutan, it is common to find locals wearing traditional clothing, and classic Bhutanese architecture continues to dominate the landscape.

Experience The Best Of Bhutan

There is no dearth of tourism places to visit in Bhutan. An itinerary for a Bhutan trip should ideally include the following places.

Buddha Dordenma Statue: The Buddha Dordenma Statue in Thimphu is considered to be among the most spectacular landmarks in the world, and therefore is a major highlight of Bhutan tourism. The statue is perched atop a hill, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, and provides a panoramic view of the surroundings. The Buddha Dordenma Statue is made of bronze and coated in gold, and presents an excellent example of skilled craftsmanship. The statue sits upon a meditation hall which is decorated with intricate murals that depict symbols of enlightenment and Buddhist teachings. The lotus base of the statue symbolises purity and beautifully complements the meditative posture of the seated Buddha.

Royal Takin Preserve: Kingdom of Bhutan tourism would seem incomplete unless you get to see a Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. The best place to see them is the Royal Takin Preserve or the Motithang Takin Preserve. It is a wildlife reserve area for the Takin. In addition to being home to the rare Takin, Royal Takin Preserve also has other animals like Sambar deer wandering freely. You may even spot Himalayan birds here.

Dochula Pass: Most Bhutan tourism packages include a visit to the Dochula Pass. This is a beautiful mountain pass located between Thimphu and Punakha. It is also an important historical landmark that was built in order to honour the bravery and sacrifices of the fourth king and the soldiers who were martyred during the battle against Assamese insurgents in 2003. Decorated with small chortens on a lush green hillside, Dochula Pass tells the story of Bhutanese culture and bravery.

Lamperi Botanical Garden: When it comes to Bhutan and tourism, we cannot forget the wild and wonderful rhododendron that blooms across the country and enhances the beauty of the Bhutanese landscape. Lamperi Botanical Garden is a spot especially popular among nature lovers. It is a 125-acre sanctuary where you can find over 46 different species of rhododendron.

Chele-la-Pass: Standing at more than 3,800m, Chele La Pass is Bhutan's highest motorable road pass. It is important for most Bhutan tourism packages. Chele-la-Pass is particularly famous for the incredible Himalayan views it offers. From here, you can admire the views of Tsherimgang mountains, Jichu Drake as well as Paro and Haa valleys.

Ta-Dzong: Perched high above Paro Valley, this fortress was originally built in 1649 as a watchtower to defend against Tibetan invasions. Over the decades, it has been converted into Bhutan’s National Museum. It is home to a wide variety of religious and royal artefacts, including artfully designed statues and memorabilia of the erstwhile Kings of Bhutan such as the 500-year-old coat of Ngagi Wangchuk.

How To Reach Bhutan

Bhutan tourism from India is especially popular as there are multiple ways to reach the country from here.

By Flight: You can fly down to Paro International Airport. It has direct or connecting flights from several Indian cities.

By Train: You can travel to Siliguri, Hasimara, or New Alipurduar by train, and subsequently take a taxi or bus to reach Bhutan.

By Road: There are multiple border points in India for Bhutan, Jaigaon-Phuentsholing Gelephu-Hatisar, and Samdrup Jongkhar. Phuentsholing is the most widely preferred option for those trying to reach Bhutan by road.
