In the beautiful city of Mysore lies one of the most gorgeous terrace gardens that India houses. Known to the world as the Brindavan Gardens, it is a must-see place during your Mysore visit that offers mesmerizing views. The garden is located at a distance of 20 km away from the Mysore city towards the north-west region. The Brindavan Gardens, Mysore is well-known for the symmetric design adorning illuminated terrace gardens, majestic fountains, botanical park, unique varieties of plants, and much more. In addition to this, the garden also offers boating activity to the visitors, enhancing the experience even more. The Brindavan Gardens was constructed by Sir Mirza Ismail who was the Diwan of Mysore back then. Right from the modelling of the garden to its conceptualization, Sir Mirza was involved at each step of building this alluring beauty. This garden in Mysore is spread across an area of more than 60 acres, lying out in three terraces, which ends in the shape of a horseshoe.

Brindavan Gardens: The History

Every beautiful monument or garden that makes its way to the most-loved tourist attractions comes with an intriguing history. The Brindavan Gardens is not behind. Built inside the complex of KRS Dam, the construction of this garden started in the year 1927 by the horticulture department of Mysore, and was completed by 1932. The Brindavan Gardens in Mysore is mainly a terrace garden that was ideated by Sir Mirza Ismail. According to the locals, Sir Mirza wanted to amplify the beauty of the area surrounding the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam (KRS Dam). The dam is located in the Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya District in Karnataka and is dedicated to Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. The KRS Dam is built over the Cauvery River – an eminent South Indian River and the Brindavan Gardens just takes the beauty of the entire place to the next level.

The inspiration behind this famous garden in Mysore comes from the breathtaking Shalimar Gardens that is located in Kashmir and is designed in ancient Mughal style. The alluring beauty of the place, the grandeur around it, beautiful flowerbeds, and lush green lawns – all of this makes the Brindavan Garden a sight to behold. The Main Gate

The South Brindavan Area

The second place to visit in Mysore’s Brindavan Garden is the South Brindavan area. South Brindavan area comprises the Cauvery Statue. There is a ground in front of the Cauvery Statue, which is known as the Kaveramma Circle, and contains magnificently beautiful water fountains. The terrace gardens of varying styles can be spotted from the Kaveramma Circle. On the slopes of the terrace gardens, the Allamanda and Bougainvillea plants can be seen and the lawns in the terrace gardens contain the flowerbeds and patterned hedges, with the Cypress plants in the centre. Adding to this, the South Brindavan area comprises a glass house that has several ornamental plants which are also available for sale.

The North Brindavan Area

The North Brindavan area is the most attractive spot of the Brindavan Gardens as well as one of the most famous sightseeing places in Mysore. It comprises four terrace gardens that are vast and offers spectacular views of the vibrant flower beds, ornamental trees, lush green lawns, and beautifully-decorated hedges. Adding to this, the magnificently illuminated fountains with colourful lights add to the attractiveness of the area.

Children’s Garden

The Children’s Garden is located just beside the South Brindavan where the children can play and have a fun time. The children’s park is constructed with slides, concrete birds, animals, and contains various other items to play with.

Other Activities in Brindavan Gardens, Mysore

The Brindavan Gardens offers boat rides that make your visiting experience even more enthralling and memorable. The Cauvery River lies between the North Brindavan and South Brindavan areas where visitors can enjoy a boat ride that is offered by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation. The enticing beauty of the Brindavan Gardens in Karnataka’s majestic city of Mysore while boating on the placid waters of the Cauvery River makes the trip simply amazing. Adding to this, the Brindavan Gardens comprise musical fountains and a fountain show is organized for the visitors in the North Brindavan area. The show reflects a coherent water dance that is well-complemented by the vibrant and colourful lights and music.

Brindavan Gardens, Mysore: Timings

Booking a Mysore tour package with the Brindavan Gardens in it is a plan for having a fantastic time. The Brindavan Gardens are open from 06:00 AM till 08:00 PM on the weekdays and during the weekends; the gardens are open from 06:00 AM till 09:00 PM. There is a minimal entry fee charged for everyone. Along with this, if you want to witness the spectacular illuminations at the Brindavan Gardens, you can do so by visiting the gardens at the given schedule. However, with the change of months, the timings differ.

Between the months of January to September, the illuminations take place from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM from Monday to Friday; while on the weekends, it takes place from 7 PM to 8:55 PM. On the other hand, if you are visiting the Brindavan Gardens in October, November, and December, you can witness the illumination from 7 PM to 8:55 PM on weekdays and the weekends, the illumination timings for Brindavan Garden, Mysore are from 7 PM to 8:25 PM.

Note: 

  1. Videography is strictly prohibited in the Brindavan Gardens. If you are found taking a video or using the camera for any other unauthorized purposes, a fine of Rs.50/- will be charged. 
  2. If you are looking for lodging and boarding facilities near the Brindavan Gardens, they are offered at the Hotels and Inspection Bungalow.

 Brindavan Gardens: Address and How to Reach

The distance between Mysore City to Brindavan Gardens is almost 20 Km and from Srirangapatna, it is 18 Km. You can reach the Brindavan Gardens by road via bus or car. If you are coming from any other state, you can reach Bengaluru via flight or train and then travel to Mysore by road. You can also take the Shatabdi inter-city train to Mysore.
