In a land where people follow their own faiths and religions, it is important to maintain harmony among them. On this principle, Hajo has holy shrines representing the three main religions of the area – Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism.

Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, Hajo is prominently featured in Silchar tourism. The most well-known temple in the area is the Hayagriva Madhava Mandir on Monikut Hill. It is believed that the temple was built in the 6th century and represents both Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Hajo Powa Mecca, on the other hand, is an important pilgrimage centre for the followers of Islam. Located on Garurachal Hill, it is believed that the Hajo Powa Mecca was constructed using the soil from Mecca, which makes the site quite important in Islam.


3. Khaspur

Khaspur is located at a distance of about 20 km from Silchar and is definitely worth adding to your Silchar travel plan. Constructed in 1690 AD, today, Khaspur is home to relics from the ancient times that highlight the historical significance of the place. Among these relics, you will also be able to find the Sun Gate and the Lion Gate, both of which are popular tourist spots near Silchar.


4. Kachari Fort

Following the death of the Koch king in the 18th century, Khaspur was conquered by the Kachari rulers.


5. Jatinga

Jatinga is one of the places to visit in Silchar that have already received their fair share of fame. The place is popularly known as ‘the valley of death for birds’. Jatinga is a scenic village located towards the south of Haflong. The valley that houses this village is famous for its orange orchids.

While this tourist place near Silchar is visited by migratory birds in great numbers, a strange phenomenon is associated with this site which has led to the death of many birds like the little egret, tiger bittern, Indian Pitta, and the kingfishers. Many people opine that the birds were killed while others believe they committed suicide. Regardless of what happened, Jatinga is still counted as a popular tourist spot in Silchar.


6. Umrangshu

Sightseeing in Silchar would be incomplete if you do not visit Umrangshu, a scenic hill station, and a popular tourist spot. Located in the North Cacher Hill region, Umrangshu lets you experience nature in its true form. About 7 km from here is Garampani, a hot spring that is said to have medicinal properties.


7. Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Temple

This temple is located at a distance of about 17 km from Silchar. A very famous temple that is among the popular tourist attractions in Silchar, Sri Kancha Kanti Devi temple is considered to be very powerful. The temple is dedicated to a Goddess who is a combination of Durga and Kali. A Kachari king built this temple in 1806 after he received a command to do so in his dreams. While the original temple was destroyed in a natural disaster, a new temple has been built in its place.


8. Maniharan Tunnel

One of the places to visit in Silchar is a tunnel located in Bhuvan Hills. It is said that the tunnel was once used by Lord Krishna. Here, you can also visit the Maniharan Temple, a popular tourist place in Silchar which is dedicated to Krishna. The Triveni River also flows underneath the tunnel and is considered to be holy by the pilgrims that visit the place.


9. Martyr’s Tomb

In 1961, the local government decided to announce the Assamese as the only official language. This stipulation ignored the significant percentage of the population of Bengali people living in the state. This decision led to a protest by the Bengali speaking population, which in turn led to the death of 11 people by the police. Martyr’s tomb was built in 1964 and was dedicated to the martyrs who lost their lives in the Language Movement of Assam. This is one of the important places to visit in Silchar that you should not miss out on.
