Let’s start with the most interesting bits. As nature would have it, Allahabad sees a confluence of rivers on its outskirts. It is at this very point where Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet - a magnificent sight for those who are keen to observe and appreciate. Also famous for the world-renowned Kumbh Mela, Allahabad has many famous things to check out. The city plays an iconic role both in Indian history and Hindu mythology. Along with that, Allahabad is a humble abode with places where you can eat to your heart’s content.

If you are wondering about the things to do in Allahabad and where to start from, check out this itinerary: -

1. Anand Bhavan

Built-in 1927, Anand Bhavan is a striking two-storey house where Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, and the others effectively planned the defeat of British Raj. Serving as a shrine to the Nehru Family, the stately home now houses photos, personal relics, and books that belong to the Nehru Family. Indira Gandhi got married at this very place in the year 1942. Being one of the best things to see in Allahabad, the Bhavan also has a Jawahar Planetarium where you can catch an educational show from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm.

2. Khusru Bagh

A visit to Khusru Bagh must find a place on your list of things to do in Allahabad. Having three notable Mughal tombs, Khusru Bagh is surrounded by massive walls. One of the tombs is of the first son of Jehangir, Prince Khusru. Another tomb is of Shah Begum, the first wife of Jehangir and the mother of Prince Khusru. It is in the form of a pavilion which is a three-storeyed tomb. However, the most alluring tomb amongst all the three tombs of Khusru Bagh was built by Nesa Begum, who was the sister of Khusru. An important fact to note here is that this tomb was never actually used as a tomb! You can also visit the insides of the tomb of Shah Begum and Prince Khusru and gawk at the marvellous collection of nature painting and distinctive window jalis made in the shape of a tree.

3. Sangam

You may accuse us of romanticizing it but hey, we are just stating the obvious.

Sangam’ or river confluence is the point where two Indian holy rivers i.e. the Yamuna and the Ganges meet a mythological river of Hinduism called the Saraswati. Pilgrims reach this very spot through the help of boats. During the boat ride, one gets a chance to witness the natural beauty of the spot up close. As a matter of fact, Sangam looks spectacular regardless of the time you visit it.

The number of pilgrims increases significantly around the time of the yearly Magh Mela. Being a six-week-long festival that takes place between the months of January and March, the mela is something that must be added on your list of things to do in Allahabad.

Good to Know: You can also visit the Ganga Aarti at Saraswati Ghat and Nehru Ghat at the time of sunset. It is the time when the sky is illuminated with multi-hued sun rays that seem to slowly vanish amidst the holy chants at the aarti. Something that happens daily, Ganga Aarti is one of the famous things in Allahabad that you absolutely must not miss out on. Hundreds of visitors come to immerse themselves in the divine aura that surrounds this place.

4. Kumbh Mela

Another highlight of Sangam is that the iconic Kumbh Mela happens here every 12 years, bringing millions of people to Allahabad. Being one of the things Allahabad is famous for, the Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage in which pilgrims gather to bathe in the holy river. The Ardh Kumbh Mela takes place every 6 years, drawing interest from people around the world. So, you can always plan to visit Allahabad during the time of Kumbh Mela.

5. Allahabad Museum

Situated in the company Bagh, the Allahabad Museum is a repository of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and historical artefacts spread all across the museum gallery. As far as the landmark is concerned, you will find a great statue of Chandra Shekhar Azad outside the red-coloured building. The museum is situated at a great location with an expansive lawn and a beautiful garden.

One of the famous things of the Allahabad Museum when here is the Gandhi Smriti Vahan which once carried the ashes of Gandhi.

6. Bade Hanuman Ji Temple

Also known as Lete Hanuman Mandir, this is in close proximity to the Akbar fort. The temple itself is a red building having an underground pit inside it where a massive statue of Lord Hanuman is positioned. It is actually in a lying position with one side partially submerged in water. The temple is said to be the place where Hanuman took some rest after he burnt Lanka. So when you are wondering about the interesting things to do in Allahabad, make sure you check out this intriguing temple that afforded bajrangbali a brief respite.

7. Akbar Fort

Located very close to Sangam, the Akbar Fort was constructed by Akbar in the 16th century. Also known as the Allahabad Fort, a large portion of this fort is closed. One of the most famous things in Allahabad, this fort has an underground section that houses the Patalpuri Mandir where you will find multi-hued idols enough to pique your curiosity!

After you visit all these places, you can head to Civil Lines where you can savour delicious food at various restaurants present here. If that was not enough, you also have numerous shops to purchase souvenirs from.

Such is the vastness of Allahabad that it makes sense to have an Allahabad tour package. Even if you are not spiritually inclined, you should still visit this place for the heritage and the endless stories it has to tell. Allahabad offers you a lens to the vibrant culture of India; all you need is a will to explore.
