Quick Summary

The Day of the Dead happens around Halloween but is a distinct celebration focused on remembering loved ones.

Families gather to pray and honor the deceased, believing souls briefly return to Earth to feast and celebrate.

Living relatives prepare the favorite foods and special offerings to welcome the returning spirits.

People dress in skull costumes, paint their faces, and join dances, singing, and colorful processions.

You can share gifts like candy sugar skulls and leave lighthearted, humorous poems at graves.

Because it feels joyful and life affirming, the festival draws many tourists worldwide.

Have you watched the Pixar movie Coco, then you are going to know what we are talking about here. The Day of a Dead! A festival that my wife Heta actually attended this year and one that happens around the same time as Halloween, but although it does sound very much like Halloween, is not Halloween. And after the movie Coco, which went on to be a super hit, this has become a major tourist attraction! So what happens on the day of the dead! It’s a festival, where family and friends gather together to pray and remember the people who have died. And, in Mexico, it is believed that during the festival there is a brief period where the souls of the dead are awakened and return to the Earth to feast, drink and dance with their loved ones. And for this, the living family members honour the deceased by cooking their favourite food and offerings. It is seen as a day of the celebration of life rather than mourning. People dress and dance and sing in skull costumes, and march in beautiful processions with their faces painted like skulls. There’s also a tradition of giving your friends gifts like candy sugar skulls, write light hearted and humorous poem verses about the deceased and visiting graves with gifts for them. All in all, it is a super heart warming festival that understandably attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world.
