The Statue of Liberty was actually a gift!

2 mins. read
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States of America. It’s literally on everyone’s bucket list. Located on Liberty Island in New York City, the Statue stands tall at 151 feet (46 meters) and is made of copper. It depicts a woman holding a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other, with a broken chain at her feet. The statue is located on top of a pedestal, which is accessible by a staircase inside the statue. From the pedestal, visitors can get a panoramic view of New York City and the surrounding area.
Now one interesting story about the Statue of Liberty is that it was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. The idea for the statue originated in 1865 when French historian Edouard de Laboulaye proposed building a monument to celebrate the friendship between the two countries and the ideals of liberty and democracy that they shared.
The project was led by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the statue. Funding for the project was provided by both the French and American governments, as well as private donors. Construction of the statue began in 1875 and was completed in 1884.
On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was officially unveiled in a ceremony attended by President Grover Cleveland and thousands of spectators. It has since become a beloved symbol of freedom and a popular tourist attraction. Have you seen The Statue of Liberty?
