Quick Summary

India does have an active volcano, with Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands being the one most travelers should know about.

Barren Island is a small 3 km island featuring a 2 km wide caldera and surrounding walls up to 350 metres high.

The volcano sits mostly under the Indian Ocean, covering about 99% of its surface.

Barren Island has erupted repeatedly, with known activity from 1787 to 1832, then again in 1991, and most recently starting in September 2018.

You can visit Barren Island by taking a four hour sailing trip from Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Does India have a volcano? or an active volcano? So as of today, there are a total of 1350 active volcanos in the world. And yes 1 of these is indeed located in India. How crazy is that! No one really speaks of it all that much right. Presenting Barren Island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, a volcano that was formed 1.8 million years ago. A 2 km-wide caldera, which is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses, can be found here that is encircled by walls up to 350 metres high can be found on this 3 km-wide island.
The Indian Ocean covers about 99% of the volcano's surface. So when has it erupted in the last? So the first known eruption took place between 1787 and 1832. The volcano was then dormant for a century before erupting once more in 1991. Since then, it has erupted every two to three years. That’s crazy right, every two or three years. Lava flows, or streams of molten rock flowing from the eruption, as well as lava fountains, which are non-explosive strong ejections of lava, were visible during its most recent eruption, which started in September 2018.
So can one visit Barren Island today? So you can after a four-hour sailing trip from the capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Port Blair. And finally, to end the topic, it’s worth noting that in the past India had a total of 6 active volcanos. But over centuries, 5 of them have gone dormant or have become extinct.
