Kashi has attracted numerous pilgrims, scholars, and wanderers through the centuries. It is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the planet and is characterised by a rich tapestry of history and spirituality. The sacred River Ganga flows through the heart of the city. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple lies on the banks of this holy river.

Kashi, today known as Varanasi, is considered to be the spiritual capital of Hinduism. It is home to a number of ghats and popular temples, which witness a variety of fascinating rituals and vibrant religious festivals throughout the year. As you walk along the ghats of Varanasi, you will get to enjoy the rhythmic chants of pilgrims, which create an enchanting and transformative ambience.

Pilgrims visiting the Baba Vishwanath temple in Varanasi often choose to attend Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedha Ghat. It is a captivating ritual through which devotees pay homage to Goddess Ganga.

Experience the Best of Kashi Vishwanath Temple

When planning a trip to Varanasi to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, your itinerary should ideally include the following:

Kashi Vishwanath Temple: Lying on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, the Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country. As per Hindu beliefs, a visit to this temple and a dip in the holy Ganges nearby can lead to moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death. Beyond its spiritual importance, this temple is also an architectural marvel.  It is also called the ‘Golden Temple’ due to its 15.5 m high gold-plated towers. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, as it stands today, features the Nagara style of architecture and was constructed in the 18th century. The temple structure is divided into three major structures. The first is a spire on the building, the second is the golden dome, and the third is the golden tower with a flag and trident at the top. The temple is quadrangle in shape, and is surrounded by smaller shrines of several gods like Kaalbhairav, Vishnu, Dhandhapani, Vishalakshi, Annapurna, Virupaksha, Vinayaka and Virupaksha Gauri.

Ganga Aarti: Ganga Aarti is a grand ritual held every morning and evening on the banks of the River Ganges in Varanasi. It is performed at the Dashashwamedh Ghat. Ganga Aarti involves huge brass lamps lit with oil, with priests and devotees chanting holy mantras that reverberate in the entire region. The synchronised movements of the priests, along with the rhythmic chanting of hymns and ringing of bells create a truly enchanting ambience.

Kaal Bhairav Temple: Lord Kaal Bhairav is the presiding deity of this temple, and is depicted with a dark complexion, carrying a trident and wearing a garland of skulls. Kaal Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Devotees visit this temple to seek the protection of Lord Kaal Bhairav from diverse adversaries and negative forces. Kaal Bhairav Temple is known for its distinctive practices and rituals, which include offering liquor to Lord Bhairav.

Assi Ghat: Placed at the confluence of the Rivers Assi and Ganga, Assi Ghat is visited by both tourists and Hindu pilgrims. Here you would find a large Shiva Lingam installed under a peepal tree. Assi Ghat has been mentioned in the Puranas and various legends, and hence has immense religious importance. You can also enjoy serene and stunning views of the sunset and sunrise at the ghat.
