Hemkund Sahib is a sacred Sikh shrine and pilgrimage destination located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is believed that the tenth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, meditated here in his previous incarnation. This site is also associated with Hindu mythology, as it is believed to be the place where Lord Ram’s brother, Lakshman, performed penance.
In addition to being a popular place of worship, Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara has also gained significant prominence as a sightseeing spot. This star-shaped Gurudwara is surrounded by seven snow-capped peaks, and lies beside a serene lake whose icy waters reflect the blue sky and the white clouds, ultimately creating an enchanting sight. The water of this lake is considered to be sacred, and many devotees take a dip here, seeking blessings and spiritual purification. You would enjoy a mesmerising ambience on your Hemkund Sahib yatra, as the air here is filled with the fragrance of the herbs and flowers growing in the nearby Valley of Flowers.
Experience the Best of Hemkund Sahib
Your itinerary for a trip to Hemkund Sahib should include the following:
Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib: This Gurudwara holds immense spiritual significance for Sikhs and is widely considered to be a symbol of devotion, meditation, and spiritual awakening among the community. The Sikh scripture Granth Sahib recognises Hemkund Sahib as a place where Guru Gobind Singh performed penance. Thousands of Sikhs go on the Hemkund Sahib yatra every year in order to pay respects at the Gurudwara and take a dip in the holy waters of the Sarovar. At the heart of the Gurudwara, you will find the crystal-clear Hemkund Lake. This glacial lake is surrounded by seven towering mountain peaks, which are often referred to as the Saptashringa peaks. Pilgrims believe these peaks to be the form of the seven Sikh Gurus. The Gurudwara lies at the edge of the lake, which creates a distinctive, enhancing and serene atmosphere that is perfect for prayer and reflection.
Lakshman Ganga River: This river is formed by the merging of the Bhyundar Ganga (flowing from Hemkund) and the Pushpawati River, which originates from the Tipra Glacier near Rataban. The pristine waters of the river are surrounded by magnificent peaks that feature verdant meadows and diverse flora. The Lakshman Ganga is a tributary of the Alaknanda River that merges with the Bhagirathi River, eventually forming the Ganges at Devprayag.
The Laxman Temple: On the banks of the Hemkunt Lake, you will find a temple dedicated to Laxman, the brother of Lord Rama. It is positioned just 100 metres to the left of the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara. Much like the Gurudwara, this temple is also surrounded by majestic snow-covered peaks and has been a popular place of worship for several decades. It is also referred to as the Lakshman Lokpal Temple.
Ghangaria: Lying on the confluence of the River Pushpawati and the River Hemganga, this is the last human settlement in the Bhyundar Valley. It is a popular stopover for people going on the Hemkund Sahib yatra or visiting the Valley of Flowers.
Valley Of Flowers: Characterised by its rare flora and peaceful ambiance, the Valley of Flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Valley of Flowers National Park is surrounded by massive snow-capped mountains and expansive meadows. It is home to more than 600 species of exotic flowers like poppies, primulas, anemones, orchids, daisies, and marigolds. Wild streams and cascading waterfalls add to the beauty and ambience of this place.
