Indore Sightseeing: Mayuresh's Experience While Sightseeing in Indore

7 mins. read

Hi guys! I am Mayuresh, a digital marketer by profession and a traveller by passion. Since work is always hectic, I welcome any break that comes with wide-open arms. And so, when my office gave us a 4-day holiday for Diwali, I just knew I had to go for a trip. I am a big fan of historic places and I try to travel to different offbeat places in India where people generally don’t go for a vacation. And this time around, I chose Indore.

I have heard a lot about Indore from one of my colleagues who belong to the city and that just intrigued me more and more. The city has a rich history and that reverberates in Indore’s atmosphere. The roots of Indore go back to the 16th Century where the city served as the trading hub between the Deccan and Delhi. For those who are unaware, it is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and also houses two of India’s premier educational institutes – Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Management.

Quite interestingly, Indore has been ranked the cleanest city in India three times in a row – starting from 2017. And why wouldn’t it be? I was amazed to see how well maintained the streets and colonies of the city are. One thing that I loved the most about Indore was that there were dustbins kept at a distance in the town and people actually follow the rules with utmost discipline. As I said, this city is a majestic combination of history and modernity that India treasures. That being said, it doesn’t lag in its natural beauty either! Believe me you, there are a lot of beautiful sightseeing places in Indore which are sure to leave you astounded.

Let’s get started. Here are the top 5 tourist destinations that one must definitely visit for a memorable sightseeing trip of Indore city:

1. Sarafa Market

So, I reached Indore in the afternoon at around 3 and after a little bit of rest, I went to explore the most popular night sightseeing spot in Indore city – Sarafa Market. Thinking why? So, I have this habit of interacting with the local residents every time I visit a new city as it helps me connect more to the city. And there wouldn’t have been a better place than the Sarafa Market for this. This bazaar is known for its authentic shops and stalls – some of which are almost 100 years old. You will come across shops that sell colourful and funky artificial jewellery, artefacts, and other similar stuff. And now comes the best part of visiting this market – street food.

Sarafa Market is a heaven for street food lovers and I will be very honest with you – I am a big-time foodie. Right from the mouth-watering golgappas to the yummy bites of chaat, this market has it all. However, I really cannot forget the taste of Bhutta Kees topped with spicy coriander chutney and lime juice. Apart from this, there were a lot of sweet shops too.

2. The Mighty Rajwada

After my amazing experience at the Sarafa Bazaar, the next day started on a royal note. Built by the Holkars of the Maratha Dynasty, Rajwada is one of the most beautiful historical sightseeing destinations in Indore, the foundation of which goes back to 200 years ago. The place is divided into two parts – one part is a temple and the other part a palace. The garden here is a beautiful one which houses the statue of Queen Ahilya Bai, an artificial waterfall, and elegant fountains. Rajwada is a famous local sightseeing location in Indore because of its architectural splendour and historical importance.

3. Lal Bagh Palace

This is yet another historical sightseeing place in Indore that blew my mind away. The Lal Bagh Palace was the official residence of the rulers of Holkar dynasty. Spread across an area of 28 acres, this palace perfectly reflects the taste, tradition, and culture of the Holkars. What amused me here was the maintenance. I mean, even after so many years, the palace and its artefacts are so well-maintained that you can actually notice their intricacy in detail. The palace is bestowed with Italian marble pillars, royal chandeliers, gorgeous Persian carpets, and many more marvels that contribute to making this place a famous spot for local sightseeing tour in Indore.

4. Patalpani Waterfalls

After my historical exploration, it was time for me to have some fun in the lap of nature. And what better than visiting the majestic Patalpani Waterfalls? So, when I planned my Indore sightseeing trip, my colleague said this – “Don’t miss out the Patalpani Waterfalls; because you will regret later if you don’t”. Those words somehow stuck with me, and now I know why he said that! The picturesque view, the cascading waterfall, and the pristine ambience – this place has everything I wanted to rejuvenate myself.

5. City Darshan & Shopping

On my last day of the trip, I went on exploring the local sightseeing tour places that Indore proudly boasts of. Kaanch Mandir, City Museum of Indore, and Chhappan Dukan were some of the places that I visited. Each of these places had a different vibe, a different story to tell. While the Kaanch Mandir is made out of glass and designed with intricate artwork on it, the City Museum of Indore houses the pre-medieval and medieval sculptures and other authentic artefacts that reflect the history of the city. Chhappan Dukan, on the other hand, is again a food street that offers a variety of chaats and foods that I still have the taste of.

Since I didn’t have the time, I couldn’t visit all the sightseeing spots. Mohadi Falls, Gandhi Hall, Meghdoot Garden, and Tincha Falls are some of the other famous local sightseeing places in Indore. Should you plan a trip here and book an Indore sightseeing package? If you were to ask, go for it without a second thought; you’ll be glad you did.
