Quick Summary

London’s streets sit above decades old tunnels and secret underground spaces that many people never notice.

During the Cold War, underground tunnels were built to protect key machinery and communications from nuclear threats.

London’s secret networks included defence, postal, and government routes running beneath the city.

A notable example is the Postmaster General’s secret tunnel under 57 Whitehall in the heart of government.

Some tunnels connect to the Old War Office area associated with Winston Churchill.

The busiest streets often hide the most silent tunnels, so there’s always more beneath your feet.

When you are walking on the roads of London you’re unknowingly walking on many tunnels and secret places!
The tunnels have been there for decades but nobody knows about it and the British government has tightened its lips about it!
Why are those tunnels built? What was its use? Well, we have the answers!
London was one of the largest cities and was the capital of the world’s most powerful and largest empire. During the cold war, many tunnels were built underground. A city under the city.
The Defence, Postal and Government Networks, all happened through these secret tunnels. Hundreds of tunnels lie under the bustling streets.
According to the BBC reports, one of the most interesting revelations in recent times is the Postmaster General's secret tunnel, which runs right under the heart of the government at 57 Whitehall. London was at threat of a nuclear attack in the Cold War and so it was built to protect important machinery and communications. The bunker goes to the Old War Office used by Winston Churchill during the war.
Mark Ovenden, an author who has written a book about the secret tunnels, has described these tunnels as possessing one of the world’s most diverse varieties of intricate, hidden, and well-used passages, ducts, and tubes beneath its streets.
