As a cinema enthusiast with a passion for travel, I've always been fascinated by the way Bollywood films transport their audiences to stunning locations around the globe. Bollywood's penchant for storytelling is not confined to the geographical boundaries of India. Rather Indian filmmakers have traversed continents to bring diverse backdrops and authentic experiences to the silver screen. From the snowy peaks of Switzerland to the bustling streets of New York, Bollywood films have made these locations a character in their own right, often influencing travel trends and promoting cultural exchange. So today, I wanted us to take a tour of the most famous shooting locations featured in Bollywood movies, places that have not only captured the imagination of filmmakers but have also become bucket-list destinations for fans like me.

And if there is one place that provides the perfect backdrop to begin, it has to Europe. With its rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes, Europe has been a favourite among Bollywood filmmakers for decades. The continent's diverse settings—from the romantic streets of Paris to the serene beauty of the Swiss Alps—have provided the perfect backdrop for countless memorable scenes.

No discussion of Bollywood's overseas shooting locations is complete without mentioning Switzerland. The love affair between Bollywood and the Swiss landscapes was famously kindled by director Yash Chopra, earning him the affectionate title of the 'Man who discovered Switzerland for India'. Toronto, Vancouver, and the picturesque town of Banff in Alberta have particularly stood out as popular destinations for shooting, highlighting Canada's appeal as a versatile and welcoming location for film production.

The United States of America has been a popular backdrop for Bollywood movies, symbolizing dreams, ambition, and the complexities of the Indian diaspora's experience. Iconic cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas have been featured in numerous films, offering a glimpse into the American lifestyle and landmarks. "My Name is Khan" famously portrayed its protagonist embarking on a journey across the country, showcasing the diverse American landscape and societal fabric. Similarly, "Kal Ho Naa Ho" took to the streets of New York City, capturing the essence of the bustling metropolis and its melting pot culture, while "Dostana" presented the sunny beaches and vibrant life of Miami, reflecting the city's lively spirit and scenic beauty.

"Salaam Namaste," set in Melbourne, highlighted the city's modern lifestyle and multicultural vibe, exploring themes of love and diaspora life against the backdrop of Australia's second-largest city. Its iconic skyline, featuring the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Jumeirah, has been the backdrop for many movies, reflecting the aspirations and opulence often associated with the region. Films such as "Happy New Year" and "Welcome Back" have showcased Dubai's lavish lifestyle, architectural marvels, and the cosmopolitan ethos of the city. The UAE's blend of traditional Arab culture with cutting-edge urban development offers a unique setting for stories that bridge the past and the future.

As I reflect on the journey through Bollywood's favorite shooting locations around the world, I'm reminded of the power of cinema to bridge distances and cultures. Each film I've mentioned has not just entertained us but has also sparked a curiosity to explore these destinations, to see the world through the eyes of my favourite characters. These iconic locations, from the serene Swiss Alps to the bustling streets of Dubai, have become more than just settings in a movie; they're invitations to experience new cultures, landscapes, and stories. Through Bollywood's lens, we have embarked on a global adventure from the comfort of my home, developing a deeper appreciation for both the art of filmmaking and the beauty of our world.
