From the Swiss Alps to the Australian Outback, discover the iconic global destinations that have become stars in Bollywood's cinematic universe. A journey through the landscapes that frame India's most beloved films

As a cinema enthusiast with a passion for travel, I've always been fascinated by the way Bollywood films transport their audiences to stunning locations around the globe. Bollywood's penchant for storytelling is not confined to the geographical boundaries of India. Rather Indian filmmakers have traversed continents to bring diverse backdrops and authentic experiences to the silver screen. From the snowy peaks of Switzerland to the bustling streets of New York, Bollywood films have made these locations a character in their own right, often influencing travel trends and promoting cultural exchange. So today, I wanted us to take a tour of the most famous shooting locations featured in Bollywood movies, places that have not only captured the imagination of filmmakers but have also become bucket-list destinations for fans like me.

And if there is one place that provides the perfect backdrop to begin, it has to Europe. With its rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes, Europe has been a favourite among Bollywood filmmakers for decades. The continent's diverse settings—from the romantic streets of Paris to the serene beauty of the Swiss Alps—have provided the perfect backdrop for countless memorable scenes.

No discussion of Bollywood's overseas shooting locations is complete without mentioning Switzerland. The love affair between Bollywood and the Swiss landscapes was famously kindled by director Yash Chopra, earning him the affectionate title of the 'Man who discovered Switzerland for India'. Films like "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" showcased the country's majestic mountains and lush meadows, turning them into dream destinations for Indian travellers. The impact was so profound that a lake in the Swiss town of Alpenrausch was renamed Chopra Lake, celebrating the director's contribution to Swiss tourism.

Following in a similar way, Spain emerged as a popular Bollywood destination with the release of "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara". The film, which follows a group of friends on a road trip across Spain, introduced Indian audiences to the country's vibrant culture, historic architecture, and the thrilling Tomatina festival. The scenic beauty of locations like Barcelona, Costa Brava, and Seville, combined with the portrayal of local customs and festivals, has inspired many Indian travelers to follow in the characters' footsteps, boosting tourism in the areas featured. Italy's romantic ambiance and historic architecture have attracted Bollywood's gaze on several occasions. The country's picturesque towns and cities, such as Venice and Verona, have been the setting for numerous love stories. Notably, "Rockstar" featured scenes shot in the historic city of Verona, home to Juliet's balcony, which symbolizes love and romance.

The allure of global destinations acting as a backdrop for Bollywood movies is not restricted to Europe alone. North America, with its vast landscapes, iconic cities, and diverse cultures, offers a wealth of settings for Bollywood's storytelling ambitions. From the urban jungles of New York City to the serene landscapes of the Canadian Rockies, Bollywood has utilized these backdrops to add depth and grandeur to its narratives. Let's delve into how this continent has been featured in Bollywood cinema.

Canada's stunning natural beauty and cosmopolitan cities have caught the eye of Bollywood filmmakers for years. The country's scenic vistas, including the majestic Rockies, lush forests, and modern cityscapes, have been used to represent both itself and fictional or other real-world locations. Movies like “Neal n Nikki”, and "Thank You" were extensively shot in Canada, showcasing the country's diverse landscapes and multicultural urban settings. Toronto, Vancouver, and the picturesque town of Banff in Alberta have particularly stood out as popular destinations for shooting, highlighting Canada's appeal as a versatile and welcoming location for film production.

The United States of America has been a popular backdrop for Bollywood movies, symbolizing dreams, ambition, and the complexities of the Indian diaspora's experience. Iconic cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas have been featured in numerous films, offering a glimpse into the American lifestyle and landmarks. "My Name is Khan" famously portrayed its protagonist embarking on a journey across the country, showcasing the diverse American landscape and societal fabric. Similarly, "Kal Ho Naa Ho" took to the streets of New York City, capturing the essence of the bustling metropolis and its melting pot culture, while "Dostana" presented the sunny beaches and vibrant life of Miami, reflecting the city's lively spirit and scenic beauty.

Moving to the southern hemisphere then, Australia's appeal to Bollywood is multifaceted, encompassing its bustling cities, serene beaches, and rugged interior. Films like "Salaam Namaste" and "Chak De! India" have showcased different aspects of the country, from the cultural diversity of Melbourne to the scenic beauty of Queensland. "Salaam Namaste," set in Melbourne, highlighted the city's modern lifestyle and multicultural vibe, exploring themes of love and diaspora life against the backdrop of Australia's second-largest city. Meanwhile, "Chak De! India" featured scenes shot in Sydney, capturing the city's iconic landmarks and the spirit of international sportsmanship.

The choice of Australia as a shooting location serves multiple purposes, offering visually stunning scenes that attract viewers while also exploring the incredible things that the land down under has to offer. The country's diverse environments, from urban centers like Sydney and Melbourne to natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback, provide a rich palette for filmmakers to craft visually compelling narratives.

Thailand too has become a go-to destination for Bollywood filmmakers seeking exotic backdrops combined with urban modernity. Its pristine beaches, lush jungles, and vibrant city life offer a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. Films like "Ready" and "Baaghi" were shot across various locations in Thailand, including Bangkok's bustling streets and the picturesque island of Krabi. The country's natural beauty, coupled with its rich cultural heritage, provides a versatile setting for narratives ranging from high-octane action sequences to tranquil romantic escapades.

How can we leave out the UAE right? The United Arab Emirates, particularly Dubai, has emerged as a symbol of modernity and luxury in Bollywood films. Its iconic skyline, featuring the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Jumeirah, has been the backdrop for many movies, reflecting the aspirations and opulence often associated with the region. Films such as "Happy New Year" and "Welcome Back" have showcased Dubai's lavish lifestyle, architectural marvels, and the cosmopolitan ethos of the city. The UAE's blend of traditional Arab culture with cutting-edge urban development offers a unique setting for stories that bridge the past and the future.

As I reflect on the journey through Bollywood's favorite shooting locations around the world, I'm reminded of the power of cinema to bridge distances and cultures. Each film I've mentioned has not just entertained us but has also sparked a curiosity to explore these destinations, to see the world through the eyes of my favourite characters. These iconic locations, from the serene Swiss Alps to the bustling streets of Dubai, have become more than just settings in a movie; they're invitations to experience new cultures, landscapes, and stories. Through Bollywood's lens, we have embarked on a global adventure from the comfort of my home, developing a deeper appreciation for both the art of filmmaking and the beauty of our world. I certainly am excited to see where Bollywood will take us next, forever grateful for the windows it opens into the vast, vibrant tapestry of our planet. Which Bollywood movies are you reminded of that left a last travel impression on you? Did I miss out on any? Let me know by writing to me at neil@veenaworld.com Until the next time, keep celebrating life!
