It is just the valley, the light and sweet silence as everyone and everything soaks in the first few rays of the giant star that warms our planet.

Araku Pinery
Out of all the places to visit in Araku Valley, Araku Pinery is one of the most unexpectedly charming corners with tall pine trees, a floor carpeted in fallen needles, birdsong, and the kind of cool, clean air that makes you stop and breathe properly. The park is part of an eco-tourism venture launched by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, and the space feels nothing like the tropical landscape around it. The pinery offers tent accommodation to guests, allowing them to experience a touch of Himachal Pradesh on the east coast of Southern India.

Borra Caves

Distance: ~ 39 km
Chaparai Waterfalls
A little further, Chaparai Waterfalls is a famous place in Araku Valley hill station known for its natural rock slide and smooth slabs of stone over which water flows in wide, shallow sheets. The path towards the waterfalls is a short trek through dense forests and lush vegetation.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Araku Valley?
Araku is a year-round destination, but October to February hits the right spot.
The post-monsoon is the best season to visit Araku. The months bring with them pleasant weather, lush green landscapes and gushing waterfalls: ideal for sightseeing, trekking and soaking in the valley’s natural beauty. December and January are a bit cooler, but if you do not mind packing a jacket or two, it is one of the best times to be here.
Followed by this peak season is March to June. Summers are milder than most of India, thanks to the altitude and greenery. Araku Valley, at this time of the year, can make for a decent escape from the plains.
Monsoon (June to September) transforms the valley into something otherworldly. Waterfalls are at their dramatic best, and the valley turns an impossibly deep shade of green. While the season brings about the best in the valley, this might not be the best time to visit Araku Valley, as there is a higher risk of landslides and some road disruptions.
How to Reach Araku Valley?
This little valley is easily accessible via Visakhapatnam (Vizag).
By Air: The nearest airport is Visakhapatnam International Airport, approximately 115 km away. From here, you can either hitch a ride to Visakhapatnam Railway Station to board a train or hire a cab to take you to the valley. One-way taxi fares from Vizag to Araku Valley can range anywhere between INR 2000 and 8000, depending on your ride.
By Train: The Visakhapatnam - Kirandul train passes through the Eastern Ghats and covers approximately 50 tunnels, two dozen arched bridges, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in South India. The Vistadome coaches (with glass ceilings) at the back of the train are especially popular as they provide panoramic views of the valley, rushing rivers and streams, as the train trudges on the tracks, so book well in advance. The journey takes about 4 - 5 hours from Vizag and is, quite honestly, an experience in itself.
By Road: Araku is about 114 - 120 km from Visakhapatnam. From Vizag, take the route straight to Kottavalasa via NG-516B to Srungavarapukota and Araku. The drive takes roughly 3 - 4 hours and is scenic, with winding ghat roads in the last lap of the trip, coffee estates on either side, and viewpoints worth stopping at.
Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
- Book the Vistadome coaches well in advance, especially if travelling during weekends and holidays. Since these coaches offer a unique experience, they tend to fill up fast.
- Start early. Some of the best places around Araku Valley, such as Borra Caves, Katiki Waterfalls and Ananthagiri Waterfalls, often get crowded by midday.
- Try Adivasi bamboo chicken (Bongulo Chicken). A tribal speciality, this chicken is marinated with spices and slow-cooked inside a bamboo stalk. The chicken is smoky and tender with an earthy aftertaste.
- While UPI and online payment work at most places in the hill station, it is wise to carry cash. as smaller stalls and attraction entry counters often prefer cash.
- As you travel deeper into the valley to explore hidden places in Araku, mobile connectivity can get patchy. Download offline maps and have the necessary documents and numbers handy.
- The roads after a rain shower can get slippery, so if you are travelling by road, take the bends slowly and have patience.
Book your package and brace yourself for this beautiful escape!
