A few days ago, we all saw the news of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the commissioning ceremony of India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. From all of the articles you may have read, or the videos that you have seen, we know that INS Vikrant is a true symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. In other words, this is the first aircraft carrier that has been built in India. So let us talk about this grand ship for a bit then.
For starters, many have called it the floating city, with 18 floors, 14 decks and 2,300 compartments and to add to that, it can also produce electricity that can light up to 500 households. In terms of carrying capacity, it can carry around 1,500 personnel. and with the commissioning of this ship, India joins an elite list of nations with the capacity and capability to build its own aircraft carrier. Now, we have seen many reports of this glorious ship, but do you know where such a large ship or let us put it this way, where do you have to capacity to build the largest ship ever made in Incredible India? Presenting, the Cochin Shipyard Limited., a public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
So let's literally dive into some celebrated facts about the biggest ship maintenance facility in India. The Cochin Shipyard facility, churning out almost 100 trained marine engineers every year, is a masterpiece not just for its capacity, but for its work that extends to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guards too. The yard has the facilities to build vessels up to 1.1 lakh tons and repair vessels up to 1.25 lakh tons. Compare this to the INS Vikrant, which is a 45,000-tonne warship.
Having been incorporated in 1972, MV Rani Padmini in 1981 was the first ship to roll out of this shipyard. From the very first in 1981, to the INS Vikrant in 2022, Cochin Shipyard has come a long way and is a strong catalyst in it’s contributions towards making India Incredible. Hat's off to the ones who have spent their efforts in making this magnificent carrier.
