Quick Summary

The Chenab Rail Bridge, newly opened in India, is now the world’s highest rail bridge.

It connects Katra to Banihal on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla section of the Kashmir Railway project.

The bridge crosses the Chenab River at 359 meters above the water, about as tall as New York’s Empire State Building.

Engineered to handle high winds up to 266 km/h, it is built for safety in harsh weather.

The project cost about Rs 1486 crore and is designed to last at least 120 years.

With roughly 584 km of welding, the bridge’s construction is a major infrastructure achievement.

India is not just a culturally diverse country, but also one that has made remarkable contributions to the world in areas of science, medicine, infrastructure, IT and the list can just keep going on. Celebrating these exceptional marvels of our homeland, we are going to talk of the recently opened, Chenab Rail Bridge - The Highest Rail Bridge in the world!
The Chenab Bridge is a vital link on the 111 km stretch from Katra to Banihal of the Kashmir Railway project’s Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla section. The bridge spans the Chenab River at a height of 359 m (1,178 ft) above the river, making it the world's highest rail bridge. Imagine! A full 1100 ft above the river. That’s almost as much as the height of the Empire State Building in New York.
India is incredibly well connected through our railway system! And this bridge is just one more feather in that cap. It is built to withstand high winds of up to 266 km/h. Built at an approx cost of Rs 1486 crore, the bridge is designed to have a life of at least 120 years and it took about 584 km of welding to connect the various parts of the structure. That is as much as the distance between Jammu and New Delhi! It is indeed one more wonder of Incredible India!
