Quick Summary

Most commercial airliners fly between 30,000 and 40,000 feet to reduce drag and improve range and fuel efficiency.

The highest altitude ever reached by an aircraft was 85,069 feet by the SR-71 Blackbird, not a commercial airliner.

Some specialized aircraft can fly much higher, like the U-2 up to 70,000 feet and the X-15 up to 354,200 feet.

A commercial plane’s maximum altitude depends on its design, engine and wing performance, and the current atmospheric conditions.

Popular jets like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 can reach around 45,000 feet, while the Boeing 787 typically tops out near 43,000 feet.

Even when conditions allow, pilot requirements and aircraft limits ultimately cap how high commercial planes can fly.

Commercial planes, also known as airliners, are designed to fly at altitudes between 30,000 and 40,000 feet (9,144 and 12,192 meters). At these altitudes, planes are able to take advantage of the thinning atmosphere to reduce drag and increase their range and fuel efficiency. The highest altitude that a plane has ever reached is 85,069 feet (25,929 meters), which was achieved by the SR-71 Blackbird, a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. However, some planes are designed to fly at much higher altitudes. For example, the U-2, a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, is able to fly at altitudes of up to 70,000 feet (21,336 meters). The X-15, a rocket-powered research plane, was able to reach altitudes of up to 354,200 feet (108,000 meters).
The maximum altitude that a commercial plane can fly depends on a number of factors, including the specific design of the plane, the conditions of the atmosphere, and the capabilities of the pilots. Some commercial planes are able to fly at higher altitudes than others, depending on their engines, wings, and other design features.
For example, the Airbus A380, one of the largest commercial planes in service, is able to fly at an altitude of up to 45,000 feet (13,716 meters). The Boeing 747, another popular commercial plane, is able to fly at an altitude of up to 45,100 feet (13,747 meters). The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a more recent addition to the commercial fleet, is able to fly at an altitude of up to 43,000 feet (13,106 meters).
Overall, most commercial planes are able to fly at altitudes between 30,000 and 40,000 feet, although some are able to fly at slightly higher altitudes. The maximum altitude that a commercial plane can fly is limited by a number of factors, including the capabilities of the plane, the conditions of the atmosphere, and the requirements of the pilots.
