Going into Orbit vs Going into Space

2 mins. read
Going into orbit and going into space are similar, but they are not the same thing. Going into orbit refers to the process of launching a spacecraft or satellite into a circular path around a celestial body, such as the Earth or the Moon. To go into orbit, a spacecraft must be launched from the surface of the planet or moon using a rocket or other propulsion system, and it must be travelling fast enough to escape the gravitational pull of the celestial body, which is typically around 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h) for Earth. Orbits are used for a variety of purposes, including communication, exploration, and observation. Satellites in orbit around the Earth are used for things like GPS, weather forecasting, and television broadcasting.
Going into space refers to the process of leaving the Earth's atmosphere and entering the vacuum of outer space. To go into space, a spacecraft must be launched from the Earth's surface and reach an altitude of at least 62 miles (100 kilometres), which is the official boundary of outer space. Once a spacecraft reaches this altitude, it is considered to be in space. Spacecraft that are sent to other planets or moons also go into orbit around those celestial bodies in order to study them from a distance or prepare for a landing.
So, while going into orbit involves going into space, going into space does not necessarily involve going into orbit. A spacecraft can go into space without going into orbit, as long as it reaches the official boundary of outer space. However, a spacecraft cannot go into orbit without first going into space.
