About Diu Tourism

Once a Portuguese colony, Diu is a beautiful, serene island located off the coast of Kathiawad in Gujarat, India. This picturesque little city is flanked by Gir-Somnath and the Amreli District of Gujarat in the North and the majestic Arabian Sea on all three sides and is connected to the mainland via two bridges. Along with the sand, sea and sun, Diu’s Portuguese past immensely contributes to the tourism in Diu. Although it is often said that Diu offers a heady mix of Goa’s charm and Pondicherry’s freedom, this little laidback island is far from the bustle, and is an ideal vacation destination for those who really want to spend time with their loved ones.

Diu is a small island, just about 40 square kilometres with a population of about 52,000 people. Besides its unique landscape and architectural wonders, another aspect that gives an impetus to Tourism in Diu is the fact that right from the lifestyles to the food, everything has a huge Portuguese influence which is a unique experience in itself.

Diu tourism attractions primarily comprise picturesque beaches and majestic forts and cathedrals exuding the old world charm and an unmatched sense of calm. Also, since it takes about 5-6 hours to reach Diu by road from Gujarat, Diu and Gujarat tourism immensely support each other’s endeavours.

Experience The Best Of Diu

Diu is a small town which can be explored and experienced best with the following attractions featured in your trip itinerary.

•    Diu Fort: Built in 1535, the Diu Fort is perhaps the key attraction here. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the formidable fort stands in all its grandeur, attracting tourists from all over. The fort’s churches, Gothic-style bungalows, and the Shiva temple add to its unique charm. There is a lot to see and explore in the fort and the well-preserved cannons and artefacts simply add to the thrill of exploring this ancient fort. Tourists visiting the fort also speak highly of the amazing sunset views they can capture from the ramparts of the fort.

•    Naida Caves: Another aesthetic marvel in Diu is the Naida Caves. These labyrinthine structures not only hide stories of Portuguese exploits but also those of the valour and patriotic fervour of Indian soldiers as they had played an important role in Operation Vijay. These caves are a haven for photographers as not only do they present nature’s artwork, but they also have natural lighting which makes it the perfect backdrop for amazing photographs.

•    Nagoa Beach: This horseshoe-shaped beach is Diu’s most happening place since this is where you will find everything that makes for an exciting tour. While those looking for some peace and quality time with their loved ones can enjoy quiet strolls or sunbathing on the white sand, people looking for an adrenaline rush can certainly enjoy the plethora of water sports options available here. Right from scuba diving to parasailing and paramotor flying, adventure sports enthusiasts can experience it all here.

•    Panikota Fort: Fortim-Do-Mar, or the Panikota Fort, is a Portuguese ruin in the middle of the sea is another important Diu tourism attraction. Besides the fact that it is a 16th-century ruin, the fort’s location adds to its uniqueness. Visitors interested in visiting the fort have to hire motorboats or canoes to reach the destination. Formerly a Diu Jail, this fort also has a chapel and lighthouse, making it a sought-after destination for most travel enthusiasts.

•    Diu Museum: The St. Thomas Church has now been converted into the Diu Museum and is a treasure trove of the land’s rich past and a star attraction of Diu Tourism. Right from several faded and worn-out paintings left by the Portuguese to antique statues and stone inscriptions, the museum has everything that speaks about Diu’s past. The 400-year-old wooden and marble statues of St. Thomas and St. Benedict are a special attraction of the museum.

How To Reach Diu

•    By Flight: Visitors can take a direct flight to Diu Airport as it is the only airport that connects the island to the rest of the country.

•    By Train: The Veraval Railway station is 87 km away from Diu and is the nearest to the town.

•    By Road: Buses run from Porbandar, Junagadh and Veraval. Therefore, to reach Diu, visitors have to reach any one of these bus stations. People can also drive along NH8 to reach Diu from Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Baroda.

The best time to visit Diu is the winter months, from October to March.
