Tourist Places To Visit In Kerala

9 mins. read

Kerala, locally known as Keralam, has cemented its place as one of the top destinations that you must visit at least once in a lifetime. From its natural beauty to its culture and traditions, the state stays true to its title, ‘God’s Own Country’, which is further burgeoned by the variety of tourist places in Kerala. Wondering how it got its title? These 4 reasons below will do the explaining: -

Natural Beauty

Kerala is famous for its breath-taking natural beauty. With the harmony of long coconut trees, blue mountains and rivers, it is a state that’s bountiful when it comes to nature. As a matter of fact, Kerala might just be the personification of ‘serene’. It is blessed with a lot of natural beauty in the form of backwaters, beaches and hills. Add to that, there are multiple places to see in Kerala which make it an extremely engaging destination to visit.

Kerala offers a vast selection of dishes and unique flavours in its food. The cuisine here includes a variety of seafood, banana dishes, and other southern delicacies. The state is famous for its spices, so much so that its vegetarian and non-vegetation recipes are inspired by the local spices. Then there’s Sadya, an extensive and mouth-watering feast that’s usually served on banana leaves. Sounds predictable? Except it isn’t! That’s because the number of side dishes in Sadya can range from 16 to 60!

The exotic beaches of Kerala make it a haven for surfing, rafting, and many other ocean water sports. In fact, it is considered to be one of the best places in India for scuba diving and snorkelling. An intriguing fact which many might not know of; Kerala is also known for its unique Martial Arts known as Kalaripayattu. If you love a bit of adventure on your travels, mountain climbing, trekking, and camping are some of the sports activities that you can enjoy here. Other than that, you should definitely explore the Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala, which are great for rejuvenation.

Vibrant Festivals of Kerala

If you wish to truly celebrate in God's Own Country, be a part of the festivals celebrated in this culturally rich state. When it comes to the best places to see in Kerala, you must visit Vallam Kali. One of the most famous festivals of Kerala, it is a traditional boat race held during the harvest festival of Onam. The race of the “snake boat” is a major event and hence, the festival is also known as Snake Boat Race. The race involves rowing of the boats to the rhythm of the boat song.

Here are the best places to visit in Kerala:

With great architecture and several historical sites, Fort Kochi attracts a lot of tourists to the area. It is without a doubt one of the best tourist places in Kerala.

Kerala Backwaters

One of the most relaxing things to do in Kerala is to take a trip in a houseboat along the palm-fringed Kerala canals, known as the backwaters. You can even spend the night out in the middle of a lake. Enjoy the bliss of staying a few nights at a resort or along the backwaters. Also, do not miss seeing the sunset from Kakkathuruthu Island on Vembanad Lake, as featured in National Geographic.

Munnar is renowned for its sprawling tea plantations. Here, you can witness tea picking and processing, and try fresh tea straight from the gardens. There's even a tea museum! The area’s natural beauty is characterized by winding lanes, misty hills, and forests with exotic plants and wildlife.

The setting of Varkala beach is extremely beautiful and breath-taking. Varkala has a paved footpath that runs along the length of the cliff, bordered by coconut palms, quaint shops, beach shacks, hotels, and guesthouses. At the bottom of the cliff, you’ll find a long stretch of sparkling beach which you can reach by stepping down from the cliff top. Wayanad is the bright green mountainous region stretching along the Western Ghats. It has a beautiful scenic appeal, abundant coconut palms, thick forests, paddy fields, and lofty peaks that form the landscape. Owing to the nature of its terrain, the area has a lot to offer to adventure enthusiasts.

Kovalam is Kerala's most happening beach which is located about 40 minutes southeast of the capital city Trivandrum. Since then, it has become one of the top tourist places in Kerala.

Poovar Island

Have you ever seen or heard of over-water bungalows? You'll be pleasantly surprised to find them at the Poovar Island Resort. The island itself lies at the point where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea, and in between is an elongated sand bar.
