5 mins. read

A compelling old-world charm, magnificent mountain ranges, serene landscapes and rolling hills define Switzerland. To add to this, the country is dotted with quaint villages, resorts and some of the most delectable chocolate you could ever imagine. If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, the only right way to make your way across the country is via train. If you’re up for the holiday of a lifetime, read on for the best way to discover this pristine land.

A Swiss Travel pass is your golden ticket to a hassle-free trip across the country. The pass gives you unlimited travel throughout the country, free entry to museums and a discount on mountain top trips. Of course, some trains require you to book your seats in advance, but the journey itself is free with the travel pass.

1. The Golden Pass Line

First up is the Golden Pass Line, one of the most easily accessible and cost-effective train rides in Switzerland. The line connects Lucerne with Lake Geneva. The route is one of the most diverse and scenic in all the country, effectively delivering a Swiss experience in a nutshell. Break your journey in the quaint town of Interlaken and visit the incredibly picturesque valley of Lauterbrunnen.

While you don't really need to book seats on this line, it's a smart move if you plan on taking the train during the peak season. The ride itself is free with a Swiss Travel Pass. If you plan on one train ride through your trip, it would be this one.

2. Jungfraujoch

Europe's highest railway station and a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. Take a journey from Interlaken to a magnificent 11000 feet above sea level! This train ride is not cheap, but you get a 25% off with your Swiss Travel Pass. The best time to visit this part of Switzerland is during the summer months.

3. The Glacier Express

Next on the list is the Glacier Express, one of the best-known train journeys in Switzerland. This line has one of the most dramatic sceneries in the country, all year round. The journey starts in Zermatt and ends in St. Morits and is possibly one of the most luxurious train rides you will ever experience.

Be sure to reserve a seat on the train much in advance. While your Swiss Travel Pass will get you a 50% discount, you have to pay for the rest of the trip. Here's something to make your bookings and plannings better for this journey: Best of Switzerland with Glacier Express.Take the Glacier Express for its unsurpassed view of the Glaciers and the famed Matterhorn. 4. The Chocolate Train

Last on the list, but one of the most delectable experiences, is a journey on Switzerland's Chocolate Train. With stops at the charming medieval town of Gruyères and Broc, this sure is a dreamy ride. Gruyères is home to the legendary and world-famous Gruyère cheese. Spend time at the Maison du Gruyère and discover the secrets behind the production of famous Swiss cheeses. The town itself is a marvel of medieval architecture, which will leave you with a quaint unforgettable experience.

The next stop on the line is in Broc, where you can visit the Maison Cailler for a tasting of heavenly Swiss chocolate.
