Best Places to Visit in India in December

6 mins. read

When the wintry spell takes over nature’s aura, the traveller inside you begins to sneak out.

The famous jargon from the insanely famous show ‘Game of Thrones’ is going to be symbolic in a few months. Don’t get it? Well, “WINTER IS COMING”. Winters, especially the month of December, the urge to take a holiday grows stronger and stronger. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe the fact that the year is coming to an end, or maybe your wanderlust at its peak - the month of December is the best time to visit in India.

India happens to have some of the most beautiful travel destinations that the world has ever seen. These places were initially unexplored, but with the trend of travel bloggers and enthusiasts exploring these hidden beauties, India now has a lot of brilliant places to discover. When the world celebrates Christmas, India witnesses festivals like Rann Utsav, Hornbill festival, and Feast of Francis Xavier, to name but a few.

If you love to travel, then here are some of the most amazing places to visit in India in December: -

1. Kutch, Gujarat

“Ae halo” – when the words are sung at the highest vocal pitch, know that the vibrant state of Gujarat is calling you to its borders. One of the cleanest states in India, Gujarat offers you a vacation like no other. Right from the Flamingo City of Ahmedabad to the dense greens of Gir National Park –Gujarat is a state that has the right amount of traditions mixed with natural beauty.

Adding to all this is the Rann of Kutch which offers you a sight to behold. Known as India’s largest salt desert, the Great Rann is spread across an area of 30,000 sq. km. between the Gulf of Kutch and the starting of Indus River. When the blue lining of the sky meets the white spread, you can’t help but be awestruck. What makes the Great Rann one of the top places in India to visit in December is the Rann Utsav – a cultural gala of Gujarat held amidst the beautiful white salt desert. Desert camping, mouth-watering Gujarati cuisine, and folk dance – you are sure to have the time of your life!

2. Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Say hello to Gujarat’s favourite neighbouring state – Rajasthan. Another beautiful place in India to visit during December is a beautiful hill station of Rajasthan – Mount Abu. Known for its natural green covers that afford its visitors a pleasant, Mount Abu offers a mesmeric sunset view that you should definitely experience.

We have included Mount Abu as one of the best places to visit in India in the month of December because of the “Rajasthan Winter Festival”. Yes, you heard it right! Rajasthan has its very own winter festival which is an extravaganza of three days. From boating in the Nakki Lake to dancing on the beats of ghoomar – you will not feel like leaving this place.

3. Shillong, Meghalaya

If ‘heaven on Earth’ has a meaning, Shillong is exemplifying it. If you want to soak in the feel of winters, Shillong is one of the best places in India that you can visit in December. The city experiences cool and pleasant weather all throughout the year. However, when the Christmas season kicks in, the enchanting beauty of the city goes to a mystically mesmeric level. With the Liathumkhra Church, Mary Help of Christian’s Cathedral lit up in Christmas colours, the city dazzles in all its shimmering beauty. Shillong, otherwise too, feels like a place situated outside India. Known to be the ‘Scotland of East’, the city offers some of the best natural beauties like Laitlum Canyon, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Ward’s Lake, Bara Pani, and Umaim Lake, to name a few.

4. Kohima, Nagaland

If North-East is spoken of, how can the ‘Land of Warriors’ stay behind? With that, the capital city Kohima makes it to the list of places to go to in India in December. Located in the foothills of the Japfu range with an average elevation of 4137 feet, Kohima offers an amazingly scenic vista. Surrounded with lush greens all around, the city hosts one of the most happening fests in India – the Hornbill festival. The cultural gala comprises of folk dances, display of traditional artefacts, and many such events that is a cultural feast for the visitors. With such beauties to its accolades, it is no wonder why Kohima is said to be one of the most beautiful places to visit in India with your family in the month of December.

5. Goa

Who’s humming “Go Goa… La la la, Goa?” If there was to be a compilation of the most jinxed holiday destinations, Goa would actually top that list.

Goa is another such place in India that makes it to everyone’s bucket list. The state hosts the “Feast of St. Francis Xavier” every year in December – one of the biggest feasts in India. Apart from this, another reason that makes Goa one of the must-visit places in December in India is the fact that it also hosts the happening Sunburn and EDM music festivals that will leave you immersed in music. Of course, the original beauty of Goa lies in its sandy beaches where you can take part in various water activities as well as relax in serene settings.

Everyone’s always on about ending the year with a bang! Well, you now have the top destinations to do just that!
