The History of Ranikhet

The name of this town is made of two words, Rani and Khet, literally translating to the ‘Queen’s Fields’. It is said that in ancient times, the reigning Queen Padmini fell in love with the exquisiteness of this small town and to fulfil her wish, her husband, the Katyuri ruler King Sudhardev, built a palace here and named it Ranikhet. Later, this place was rediscovered by the Britishers, and they built a cantonment town here in 1869. At that time, the Viceroy of India was so impressed with the beauty of Ranikhet that he thought about shifting the army headquarters here from Shimla.

Before the British Empire, Ranikhet was under Nepalese Rule. However, the people of the Kumaon Region won the area under the guidance and leadership of General Kashi Nath Adhikari. The small town, Kashipur, was named after General Kashi Nath Adhikari. Post-Independence, a Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum was established here to display the life at Kumaon and Garhwal regiments, achievements and triumphs, their war life, sacrifices, etc.

You can experience the rich history of this small town by selecting a Ranikhet trip package from Veena World. We give you the option to customise your tour itinerary as per your preferences.
