History at a Glance

The Sariska Palace is one of the historical stories linked with the Maharajas of Alwar. The famed and legendary Maharaja Jai Singh utilised this castle as his royal hunting lodge. The exiled Pandavas are said to have sought refuge in the Sariska Tiger Reserve, which was formerly a part of the ancient ‘Matsya' empire. According to legend, Bhima smote a cliff wall with his cudgel at Pandu Pol and carved a path through a gorge in the sanctuary, as described in the famous Hindu epic "The Mahabharata."

Before it was proclaimed a nature reserve in 1955, the Sariska Tiger Reserve was a hunting field for the state of Alwar. It used to be a hunting reserve for the royal family of Alwar, Rajasthan. In 1978, the park was designated as a tiger reserve, making it a part of Indi's Project Tiger. In 1990, the wildlife sanctuary was designated as a national park, with a total size of approximately 273.8 square kilometres. Furthermore, Sariska National Park has become the world's first tiger reserve to successfully transfer tigers.

The Aravalli hill range forms the terrain of Sariska National Park, which consists of hills and small valleys. Scrub-thorn desert woods, rocky landscapes, tropical forests, grasslands, dry deciduous forests, boulders, and steep cliffs are all part of Sariska's scenery. Mineral resources, like copper, abound in the Sariska region. In 1991, the Indian Supreme Court issued a prohibition on mining within the Sariska National Park region.
