About Chilika Tourism

Chilika, located along the eastern coast of Odisha, is quite a popular tourist hub. Tourism in Chilika is largely driven by the gorgeous Chilika Lake. It is a brackish water lagoon where the Daya River meets the Bay of Bengal. This ecological wonder is known to be the largest coastal lagoon in India. It is also a haven for a wide variety of aquatic and bird life, and attracts wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers from across the nation. Chilika tourism is pretty popular among birdwatchers. After all, Chilika Lake is a crucial stopover point for migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Central Asia. This lake is not a simple sightseeing spot. Rather, it is one of the most important wetlands in the world for avian biodiversity.

Booking Chilika tourism packages allows tourists to take a boat ride across the serene waters during sunrise or sunset. The golden hues of the sky reflecting off the calm surface of the lake help create a truly mesmerising ambience. Chilika Lake tourism is also known for the playful Irrawaddy dolphins, who are often seen gliding through the water. In the shallow areas of the lake, you might be able to spot red crabs scuttling along the sandbanks.

Experience The Best Of Chilika

The itinerary of your trip to Chilika must include the following.

•    Nalaban: Nalabana Island is one of the most important aspects of tourism in Chilika as it is a prime refuge point for thousands of residents and migratory birds. Here you may get to spot birds like White-Bellied Sea Eagle, Black-tailed Godwit, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, along with regal flamingos. Such birds typically flock to Nalabana Island from colder regions like the Himalayas, Iraq, Siberia, and Iran.

•    Kalijai Temple: Chilika tourism would not seem complete without a visit to the Kalijai Temple.  The temple is surrounded by water from all sides, and Goddess Kali is its presiding deity. Both locals and tourists flock to the temple to seek blessings from the Goddess.

•    Satapada: Many people book Chilika tourism packages with the goal of watching a glimpse of playful Irrawaddy dolphins. Satapada is among the two observatories dedicated to Irrawaddy Dolphins.  You may also get to spot Bottles-Nosed Dolphins, Common Dolphins, and White-Nosed Dolphins from here.

•    Beacon Island: Another prominent highlight of Chilika tourism, this island is considered to be an architectural marvel. It features a conical pillar and a small room constructed on the submerged mass of rock in the Rambha Bay near Ghantasila Hill. The pillar has a light on top.

•    Rambha Bay:  Rambha is a picturesque cluster of tiny islands, like Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, and Bird’s Island, each of them being a delightful destination to explore. You can spend hours gliding through the tranquil waters by boat, while being completely immersed in nature, away from the noise and chaos of daily life. As you drift along, keep an eye out for the elusive Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, which are an endangered species that occasionally makes an appearance in these waters. You may even plan a trip to the nearby Rushikulya Beach. It is a renowned nesting site where these turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and provides a rare and unforgettable glimpse into the wonders of marine life.
