Ever since anybody could remember, the Garhwal Himalayan region has held a mystical appeal to it. Beyond the perceptions of a common man, for ages, the peaks of Garhwal have attracted Rishi Munis, sages and pilgrims. And when you begin sightseeing during your Yamunotri trip, you will know the reason why.

With its rugged terrain, lush forests, flowing rivers, waterfalls, and stunning mountain scenery, as well as thermal springs and glaciers, Gharwal is the nest of the sacred shrine of Yamunotri. As part of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage along with Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, Yamunotri in itself is the divine representation of Goddess Yamuna, the twin sister of Yamaraj. Yamunotri has found reference in many Puranic texts, Vedas and epics like Mahabharata and it is said that bathing in its holy waters absolves man of his sins and protects against untimely death. Legend has it that it was in return for the devotion of sage Asit who used to tap in the serene region and bathe daily in both Ganga and Yamuna.

Though many believe that Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River, but the actual source is the Saptrishi Kund fed by the Champasar Glacier in the Bandar Poonch mountains. Since the trek to the Glacier is restricted, travellers can seek blessings at the temple constructed at the basin.

The destination is both tranquil and buzzing with energy. One you can bear witness to with our Veena World Yamunotri Tour Packages.

Yamunotri temple is devoted to Goddess Yamuna who is placed as an idol inside the temple sanctum along with Goddess Ganga and Doli Yamuna. The temple also has several hot and cold water kunds which is a representation of Yamuna and the Sun God. The temple is also surrounded by several ashrams devotees can rest in.

Places to Visit in and Around on Your Yamunotri Trip

Apart from the obvious Yamunotri temple, sightseeing during your Yamunotri tour should also include,

Janki Chatti

Janki Chatti is a beautiful hamlet in the Uttarkashi district. It is also the starting point of the 6-kilometer trek to Yamunotri. The village was named after Goddess Sita, lovingly called Jabki by her father King Janak. Janki Chatti also has hot springs and affordable housing where travellers can refresh and rest before beginning their journey to Yamunotri.

Kharsali

Kharsali is the winter home of Goddess Yamuna. It is during the winter season when the idol of Goddess Yamuna is brought down from Yamunotri Temple in a ritual ceremony to spend her winter days here. The hamlet is also popular for Shani Dev Temple and meditation and yoga retreats. To enjoy the best of Kharsali, you can book Yamunotri travel packages at cost-effective prices.

Saptarishi Kund

Saptrishi Kund is one of the remote high-altitude lakes in India which is only accessible through a trek and offers some stunning views of the Himalayan peaks. Legend says that it was here that seven great sages - Kashyapa, Vashistha, Atri, Bharadwaj, Gautam, Jamdagni and Vishvamitra performed penance to appease Lord Shiva.

Dayara Bugyal

Dayara Bugyal is one of the beautiful Alpine meadows of Uttarkashi. It is also a popular trekking and camping destination. If you are up for a trekking session and love nature and adventure, make sure to include Dayara Bugyal in your Yamunotri tour itinerary.

Surya Kund

Surya Kund is a thermal water kund located inside the Yamunotri Temple. Named after the Sun God, father of Goddess Yamuna, the kund contains steaming hot water which is used to make Prasada out of rice and potatoes. The ingredients are mixed and tied together inside a soft muslin cloth which is then placed over the hot spring.

Hanuman Chatti

About 13 kilometres from Yamunotri Temple, Hanuman Chatti is a popular stopover known for its ancient Hanuman Temple and a great place to include in your Yamunotri travel itinerary. It is believed to have been where the mighty Bhima met Lord Hanuman before the Kurukshetra war.

Bali Pass Trek

Bali Pass trek is another offbeat treks that connect Yamunotri with Har Ki Dun. The trek is full of adventures and shows the raw magnificence of the Garhwal Himalayan mountains. This trek offers seasoned adventurers a run for their money and must be included in the Yamunotri travel package.

Best Time to Visit Yamunotri

The temple remains closed during the winter. Because of its location, the shrine experiences heavy snowfall. With temperatures falling around -7 degrees to 10 degrees Celsius, the roads to the temple are blocked and the idol of Doli Yamuna is carried to Kharsali - a small village located about a kilometre from Janki Chatti, where she resides for the next 6 months until the gates of Yamunotri open on Akshay Tritiya.

The best time to plan a trip and book a Yamunotri travel package is usually during the summer, from April to July. When the days are pleasant and nights are not too cold.

Though monsoon may not be a good time to plan a Yamunotri vacation, with its moderate to heavy rainfalls and occasional landslides, the lush green landscape, the flowing jharne and the sweet fragrance of wet earth surely make up for the natural disruptions on the way.
